We present the Industry report on the South Korean Cinema (January 2015)

Overview

The cinematographic industry presented some good numbers this month. It is estimated that more than 22 million people went to the cinemas. Sales reach $161 million dollars. Korean Films were watched by 14 million people, had a revenue of $100 million dollars and were able to get 62.43% of the total market. On the other hand Foreign Films grab the 37.38% of the market, were able to sell 8.4 million tickets rising $60 million dollars.



If we compare these numbers with the ones on January 2014 we can see that the industry had a slight decrease. The total number of admissions decline a 4.62% and rise $465 thousand dollar less. Despite of this Korean Cinema was able to get a higher market share than last year. It went from 57.83% in 2014 to 62.43% in 2015.


Movie Release

The Korean Films release this month that gather most viewers were, Love Forecast directed by Park Jin-Pyo with 1.760.696 viewers (CJ Entertainment), Gangnam Blues directed by Yoo Ha with 1.614.099 viewers (Showbox) and Chronicle of a Blood Merchant directed by Ha Jung Woo with 927.629 viewers (FINECUT). On the other hand the most watched Foreign Films were Taken 3 directed by Olivier Megaton (US) with 1.860.583 viewers, Big Hero 6 directed by Don Hall and Chris Williams (US) with 1.481.213 viewers, and Night of the Museum: Secret of the Tomb directed by Shawn Levy (US, UK) with 1.023.418 viewers.


Most watched films

With more than 7 million admissions Ode to My Father, directed by Yoon Je-Kyoon become the most watched film in January. This movie also become the second most watched movie in Korean cinema history with more than 13 million admissions, until not the movie continues to be screen at cinemas so we hope this number will increase in the next weeks. Another surprising milestone by this movie was that it managed to capture 32% of the market in January. The second most watched film this month was Taken 3 (US), with 1.8 million admissions. In third place we have Love Forecast, with 1.7 million admissions. In fourth place we have Gangnam Blues, with 1.6 million viewers and in number five, The Penguins of Madagascar with 1.5 million tickets sold.
